Thankful…A very personal post

Germany Unity Day 001

In case you didn’t know, I’m both German and American.  We moved from the USA to the southwest corner of Germany last fall to spend some time with my father who lives here and expand my husband’s business.  We know we’ll head back to the states one day, but for now – we’re enjoying living in Europe and running our businesses virtually.

Today’s project is a clean and simple one – but quite personal.  Today, October 3rd, was the inspiration for this project, with a little guidance from the CAS(e) this Sketch challenge.

Case This Sketch BadgeCTS_95

Today is a national holiday here – it’s our July 4th.  The cold war ended on November 9th, 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall.  Barely a year later, the two German Countries – East and West, as I had known them growing up, were united into one.  The Unification Treaty, signed on Sept 20th called for October 3rd to be officially know as Tag der Deutschen Einheit, or Day of German Unity.

Germany Unity Day 003

Growing up, we visited Germany practically every summer.  My mother, born in Prussia (then Germany, now Poland) was relocated with her family as a refugee to Dresden after World War II – she was just eight years old and the eldest of five.  She grew up in what was then known as Russian controlled East Germany behind the Iron Curtain  – as the Wall that severed this country was known.

Each summer, we would spend about six weeks here visiting friends in the west, and as a toddler, my family in the East.  Once my parents split, we came here with my Dad, and would visit my Godmother’s family in Eisenach, just over the East German Wall (border).  It was quite an experience to cross – something that took almost a whole day.  Russian soldiers would walk up to us with machine guns and take our passports 6-8 times, we’d have to unload and re-load the car several times – and they were always suspicious as to why Americans were allowed, yet wanted to go into East Germany.

To say it was an experience was putting it mildly.  We weren’t allowed to bring books, newspapers or anything really with us.  We had to register and spend every converted dollar (having receipts to show that we were taking everything with us that we were spending) back with us.

The best way I can describe going into the east was coming from a bright colorful place (it was the 70s and 80s after all) into a black and white greyish suppressed place.  It was surreal.  I’ll never forget those trips.  The buildings were still dilapidated, the streets went from paved in the west to cobblestone in the east and while we played on playgrounds in West Germany, we playing in orchards and with farm animals in the East.

So to say that I was stunned and overcome when the wall fell that 9th day in November, 1989 is an understatement.  My grandmother, cousins, aunts and uncles could finally leave and just move around if they wanted to.  It was just the thought of possibilities and color finally making its way to the East.  It would be many decades before life was somewhat normal there, but today – just 25 years later – the world is finally their oyster.

Today’s project is clean and simple, because simply put, I’m thankful for this holiday today.  I’m thankful that my family has choices.  I’m thankful that they have access to food, the bare necessities, and just all that we take for granted on a daily basis. I’m thankful that the east is finally colorful and the land of opportunity.  So this project is just that – simply the German Flag and my brushed gold heartfelt sentiment – thankful.

Germany Unity Day 005

Thank you for reading this very personal blog today, I appreciate you visiting, perusing and being a part of our virtual community.  No matter where you are in the world today, know this country glows a bit brighter on the official 24th German Unity Day.

So grab a beer and celebrate right along side us today.  The party will be big in Berlin – Germans live each day to the fullest – we know how precious freedom and liberty is.  It wasn’t a pretty history, but to be severed for so long and then unified and whole again – that’s something no German takes for granted.  Simply put – we’re thankful for today.

Clean and Simple Birthday Card for LeAnne

Clean and Simple Flower Birthday Card (2)

I decided to combine my Monday challenges today and when I saw the Merry Monday challenge today was a Birthday Hop – I was SO excited!  Of course, I went to Mojo Monday first thing at 5 AM East Coast Time…and fell in love with the sketch right away – I mean how could you not – the possibilities were endless!  I was already thinking up all sorts of Christmas ideas…then quickly switched gears and made a fun bright CAS birthday card instead!

Surprise Hop Graphic for LeAnnemojo356Clean and Simple Flower Birthday Card (4)

I love LeAnne Pugliese’s cards every time I see them on the Merry Monday Christmas Challenge Blog, so I decided she needed a Birthday card that was fun, sassy, and colorful with no less than my latest little addiction – sequins (thanks Deanne – I have you to blame for these).

I knew I wanted to use the Sassy Salutations birthday greeting and my mind immediately went to the bright pink Gerber Daisy.  My sister-in-law Claudia had these at her wedding and I couldn’t stop taking photos of them, they were so editorial!

Now I know the middles are mostly yellow, but I left it black so that I didn’t bring another color in.  It’s a fun little card, don’t you think?  My favorite parts – the flower, belly band and of course, I’m a convert – the sequins!  So LeAnne – this card is for you!  I hope you have a FABULOUS birthday!

Mojo Monday Garden Flowers

Mojo Monday Flowers

It’s the middle of summer and all the flowers here are in bloom.  I thought I’d bring you a floral card with non-traditional colors today for Mojo Monday. Smile

Today’s sketch had me immediately reach for all my floral stamps.  Did you happen to see my card last week with the amazing floral garden?  If not, check it out here.  But first see all the creative tips listed below.

Here is today’s Mojo Monday sketch from the Challenge Blog and my interpretation:

mojo353DSC01940

As you can see, I strayed a tiny bit and excluded the scallop border.  I planned on including it, but didn’t want to take away any further from the pretty flower background I created.

Creative Tips –

  • Mask various flower stamps that you have to create your own background.  Alternate open images with tighter ones for a filled out look.
  • Don’t feel you need to stick to traditional flower colors.  Here you see Baked Brown Sugar.

DSC01941

  • I kept playing with which colors to put in the background, and finally decided on adding a little texture to Vellum as a subtle piece.  To create this cross-hatch pattern, alternate a striped embossing folder to make the x’s.
  • Do you have stamps that are tucked way in the back and forgotten about?  My filigree background stamp seems to be one of those.  I wanted something with a romantic feel, so I embossed the pattern on a piece of Marina Mist card stock in versamark and clear embossing powder.  It compliments the flowers, yet stands on its own.

DSC01948

  • The greetings from this set are cool.  I love the boldness of chosen words and chose to highlight them.  I didn’t have a baked brown sugar marker, so I inked up the entire image with an ink pad and removed the ink from where I needed with a blender pen.  I then colored those words in with a marker that I did have.

DSC01943DSC01949DSC01947

  • I’m sure you’ve noticed that I rarely use just plain butterflies.  Here you see several stamped with floral images and then punched out.  It gives a little character to the wings and looks pretty cool!
  • For a finishing touch, distress your edge of the greeting, add some pearls and pop up your card front.

Mojo Monday Flowers

This clean and simple project completely works for me.  It’s loaded with various techniques, and works – even with non-traditional garden floral colors!

Sweet Summer Moments

It’s summer time – whoohoo!  And what reminds you of summer better than bold, fun and bright colors.  Admit it, you LOVE summer – so naturally, this last weeks CAS-ual Fridays Challenge was to create a clean and simple (CAS) card that uses hearts and summer colors.  I mean what a great combination!

So to make a real statement – I took it to another level and made a few butterflies out of some hearts too.  What do you think?  Let me know in the comments below.

DSC01587

CAS-ualFridays133

Creative Tips –

  • I’m sure you’ve figured out that my favorite color is blue.  I mean I use it all the time and have more blues than anything in my stock.  So I used Bermuda Bay from Stampin’ Up! as a base along with Coastal Cabana, Melon Mambo, Pacific Point (another blue…shocker!), and Daffodil Delight.   Aren’t those names just yummy! DSC01593
  • Cut some hearts out in two sizes with some framelit dies, another for your large butterfly, and you’ll need a smaller one too – I used a heart punch.
  • Some paper piercing adds some finishing detail, some foam tape or dimensionals for dramatic effect and stamp a fun design on the daffodil for your butterflies.  Here you see the left and right palm frawn from Stampscapes. DSC01595
  • To help define your butterflies, snip a little away from the sides to the end, make a small slit in the top and bottom and curl the edges.  Add some antennas and flight zoom (not sure what else to call it…lol) with a Pigma Micron or marker and you’re all set. DSC01597DSC01599DSC01598
  • The sentiment is perfect – it’s from the Happy Day set by Stampin’ Up! – how appropriate.

DSC01589

It’s a fun little card, perfect for the first couple days of spring.  I like the bright colors and clean and simple nature.  Now it’s your turn.  Have fun!

Merry Little Christmas Chalk Talk Card

Chalk Talk 004 Main R

Need a super quick, simple and fun Christmas card?  Well you’ve found it!  Today’s card takes a page from the Clean and Simple rule book.  This card is colorful, packs a punch and is quite trendy!  The Chalkboard look is fun, and the stamp set Merry Little Christmas really works for this look.  Read on for all the details!

What do you think?  It’s a fun little card, right?!!  Simple, but fun.  If you love this card and are looking for great ideas to say thanks, be sure to try out the newest Class of the Month in the classroom – Thanks.  It’s on Pre-sale for 22 more hours, then will go back up to the full price, so save 20% while you can!  Click here for class detailsChalk Talk 004 Side

Creative Tips –

  • Since the black chalk board look is so striking against the Crumb Cake, the color Cherry Cobbler is the perfect compliment to bring the card together.
  • The cute papers from the Paper Stack Season of Style really helps this particular look.  Don’t you just love the candy cane feel to the paper?Chalk Talk 004 Angle
  • Something else this card looks like is a package.  That’s one of the great ways to use the Chalk Talk Framelits
  • To give a little interest to the great amount of white space, stamp off in Crumb Cake with the splats from Gorgeous Grunge three times, once up top and once in each corner.  Chalk Talk 004 Texture
  • Tip – don’t over stamp this, it will ruin the random effect – trust me on that!  It will look forced rather than just that little interest that you were going for.
  • Your Cherry Cobbler is 2’” x 4.25” and the Basic Black is 2.25” x 4.25”
  • Cut the tag out with the Chalk Talk Framelits and stamp the greeting from Merry Little Christmas in Whisper White Craft Ink.  Draw and outline around the edge with a White Watercolor Pencil.Chalk Talk 004 CU
  • To give it that chalk board look, drop an Embossing Buddy on the tag in several places to look like chalk residue.
  • Wrap your ribbon around and tie a flat knot.  Bring your tag through to make sure of the placement on the card.
  • Attach the Basic Black to your Crumb Cake base.Chalk Talk 004 Tag
  • Tip – Use Snail on the left side of your tag and two dimensionals on the right.  This will help give it the randomly attached look.
  • Add Pearl Basic Jewels in multiple sizes for a punched up look, it looks great without them too!Chalk Talk 004 Main L

Mojo Monday Gently Falling Thanks

Gently Falling 001 004

Do you ever just need a go to sketch?  Well this week’s Mojo Monday sketch is perfect for you then!  It’s simple, straightforward and would look awesome with Designer Series Paper or just card stock.  You really can’t go wrong.

Try out some bright color combinations, play with your favorite stamp sets, or just make it all one color.  Either way, you’ll have a striking card that you and the recipient will love.  Here’s the sketch and my interpretation:

                        Gently Falling 001 006Mojo310Sketch

Creative Tips –

  • If you decide to focus on the Gently Falling stamp set like I did, you may want to keep your color palate in the season.  This is great for men or women, which is great – don’t you just love versatile cards?
  • To give the real sense of fall, rock and roll the filler image of this two step stamp set.  That way you can get that change of color look you’re striving for.  Here you see Crushed Curry, Gumball Green and Cherry Cobbler with Early Espresso as the lined image.Gently Falling 001 010
  • Follow that up with a fun embossing folder and your big shot for the background – here you see Woodgrain.  Why not – it’s a tree!
  • The Pearl Basic Jewels complete the card with the perfect finishing touch to highlight the banner.
  • Rather than keep it to Thanksgiving, you can choose any sentiment you’d like!  Here you see the Thank You from Lots of Thanks. Gently Falling 001 008
  • Tip – to make quick and simple banner flags, use punches – like the Hexagon Punch or Square Punches.  To see a quick video on how to do this, click here.
  • The card front is popped up on Stamping Dimensionals to compliment the banner and leaf popped up as well.Gently Falling 001 009
  • To extend the matte and give it a little somethin’ somethin’, add some paper piercing!  You can quickly take a project from cute, to wow by just adding some piercing.  And you’ve heard me say it before – it’s the most inexpensive way to embellish a card.  All you need is a one time purchase – Stampin’ Pierce Mat, Paper Piercing Tool, and templates like the Essentials Paper-Piercing Pack.Gently Falling 001 005

Beautifully Baroque Eastern Elegance

Don’t you just love light and fun designs?  Cool colors prevail in today’s Mojo Monday sketch; which is a simple go to sketch that you will definitely want to try.  You can see the Eastern Elegance paper plays well with the Beautifully Baroque Embossing Folder.  Here’s the sketch and my interpretation.  Don’t forget about my special that’s running till Wednesday!  It’s at the end. Smile

        Mojo309Sketch

Personal Note – I’m in the process of moving.  Yup, today I’m actually packing up the Stampin’ Studio – and that’s quite a task!  So over the next few weeks, you’ll see a few current and some fun projects from the past.  Don’t worry – I’m finding projects that I just loved – but never blogged…so I hope that’s exciting for you too!  And the only good thing about moving – purging!  So thanks for stopping by!

Creative Tips –

  • You will want to choose two complimentary but completely different pieces of Designer Paper if you go that route.  This way they won’t compete with each other.
  • For the designs you see in this project – it was necessary to flip the larger rectangle with the smaller one due to the patterns.  It worked better this way.
  • If you don’t like the size of your matte with your circles – try off-setting them like shown here.  Add some piercing to really accentuate it.
  • To help make the baroque medallion stand out, emboss it with the Beautifully Baroque Textured Embossing Folder, then add Dazzling Diamonds glitter to 2-way glue on the raised image portions.
  • Pop the medallion up further than the banner to really give it a little depth.
  • The card front, banner and medallion are all popped up on Stamping Dimensionals.

How to use your Background Stamps

Really Good Greetings 003 002

It’s Mojo Monday again and today I wanted to show you how to use all those Background stamps and papers that you have.  I love background stamps – they are super hard for me to part with when I have a sale, and I use them over and over – you should take a look at your stash too!

Today’s card is perfect for backgrounds.  With this design, I show you how I used four different sets plus some of my Christmas Paper from Season of Style in a birthday card.  Here is this week’s sketch and my result.

          Mojo307Sketch Really Good Greetings 003 004

Creative Tips –

  • Rather than use the Season of Style Designer Paper Stack paper as the accent triangles, you can go for a much bolder statement with it as the background.
  • You do not want to compete with the bold stripes, so when you choose your background patterns, you will want to stay away from bold lined patterns or Chevrons.  I chose some completely different designs plus one lightly lined (striped) pattern.  Really Good Greetings 003 006
  • The stripes from the Gorgeous Grunge stamp work because it has a varying amount of white space in-between the lines and they are thin lines, not bold like the Designer Paper.
  • The backgrounds you see here are Dictionary, Gorgeous Grunge, World Map and Swallowtail – yes, that’s part of the butterfly wing!  I love patterned images like that – other good ones are the flowers from Regarding Dahlias and Blooming with Kindness.Really Good Greetings 003 008
  • The greeting is from the must have greeting set of this year – Really Good Greetings.  To help it to stand out from all the patterns and busy goings on of the card, you will want to emboss it and leave it alone on that big circle (Circle #7, counting from smallest to largest in the Circles Collection Framelits) with the large amount of white space.  The contrast the extra white space brings to the card lets it shine.  After all – the greeting says it all – and it wouldn’t work if it got hidden by all the competing elements.Really Good Greetings 003 007
  • To help the circle stand out a bit more, you can edge it with your versamark ink pad and embossed it in black as well.
  • The flower is from the BigZ die – Blossom Party Originals.  You can add a center by itself – like the black center here, which was punched with the circle punch from the Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack, or top it off like I did with the Large Rhinestone Jewel.  Really Good Greetings 003 009
  • To give the flower a little depth, pop it up with a Stampin’ Dimensional.
  • To make the banner ends, you can use the new Hexagon Punch or make your own with paper snips or a Square Punch.  View my Banner video hereReally Good Greetings 003 003

The sketch this week is a classic that you can use over and over again.
