Spring Fling Blog Hop

It’s release day over at Catherine Pooler Designs, and we’re kicking it off with a creative packed Blog Hop – it’s the Spring Fling Release!

Today, the shop has some brand spanking new Inks! Yes, the Party Collection just got 8 new colors…and I even managed to use them all on one project below.

In addition to the new ink pads & refills – there is a great floral stamp set – Beautiful You, a fun sentiment set – Simply Stated, my favorite new background stamp – Modern Damask and that’s just the stamps! Catherine also released two circle die sets – one with embossed dots (Dotted Circles), a go to regular set (Circles) – that matches many stamps, and three word dies – Spot on Sentiments.

I have to say, the Party Collection of Catherine Pooler Inks is quickly becoming a necessary go to for me. I’m in love with the vibrant fully saturated colors, and although today’s release looks more on the pastel side…let me tell you – they really pack a punch! Just take a look at all this color goodness:

I found it interesting that the colors I wouldn’t normally gravitate toward, I keep reaching for – they are just that cool! Check them out yourself in the store here.

Now for the creative fun, as I mentioned this is a Blog Hop, so after you check out my projects, be sure to see the amazing projects the rest of the Dream Team made!

Beautiful You

I thought I’d keep this one simple for you – three slightly masked flowers from the Beautiful You stamp set – I LOVE this set, and can’t wait to show you SO much more with this (yes, you’ll have to keep coming back…lol).

You’ll want to use Sweet Sixteen and Pixie Dust to color the smaller flowers, and then layered both colors using an Aqua Brush for a little more depth in the larger flower.

The leaves are colored with Garden Party, and for a little background interest – use It’s a Boy – it’s PERFECT for sky, and around flowers. I kept it quite diluted the further out I went, but stronger right up against the flowers.

Stamp a few of the filler images (can’t have enough of those), add your sentiment and draw a border to tie it all together with a micron pen.

To use the ink pads – just smoosh them on an acrylic block and you have a quick watercolor palette.

To give this set an elegant garden look – pair it with the Lovely Lattice background stamp – it’s perfect for this card. I love it black on black, don’t you? So simple, yet it really finishes the card off.

Spring Fling Rainbow Congrats

I wanted to really see what these new colors could do, so I created a Wrinkle Free Distress technique piece with each one. Let me tell you, they didn’t disappoint. I was actually quite surprised at how vibrant they actually were. And here they are all together – how could you not love these?

I am going to use the majority of these pieces for a few projects coming up in the next few days, but for today – I wanted to see what all 8 would look like on one card. How fun is this card – it’s happy, colorful and just fun.

Once you have your technique pieces – click here for a video on how to do the wrinkle free distress technique that I used to create those, trim off a 3/8 or 1/2″ strip of each. Overlap them onto a card base and adhere your sentiment right over.

To add a little bling – run a Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pen over your sentiment and add a few Sequins.

That’s it! You can see how quickly you can make several of these.

Thanks for hanging with me for a bit – now you’re off to the VERY talented Lydia Evans – I know you’re jaw will drop when you see what she’s created for you!

Be sure to comment along the way too. Catherine is going to draw three winners from the blogs – you may just find yourself with an ink collection of your own! 🙂

Blog Hop List:

And stop by in the next few days for more creative fun with this collection! Happy Hopping!!

Embossing on Christmas Cards

Today I have a Christmas card for you that would make a wonderful mass produced card. The theme over at the Happy Little Stampers Christmas Challenge this month is embossing – and this card is loaded with embossed pieces.

hls-christmas-challenge-october-2016

I”m using my favorite new wreath and stamped embellishments by Wonderful Wreath by Catherine Pooler Designs. And let me tell you, with the matching die cuts it’s SUPER easy to get nice cut out pieces – love that!

christmas-embossing-ingrid-blackburn-hls

First stamp & emboss the wreath in a few greens. I inked it up in Versamark, then Peeled Paint, Forest Moss & Evergreen Bough Distress inks. Then just emboss in clear and you have your own custom embossed color! Pretty awesome, right? I’ve been doing this technique for years – that way you don’t need to buy all those colors that you’ll only use once – use what you have!

christmas-embossing-ingrid-blackburn-003

Emboss your berries the same way, using Barn Door. Next, emboss the birds and scripty greeting from this set in Gilded Gold by Brutus Monroe – my go to gold. TIP – Keep in mind that the Gilded Gold looks so much like a foil – it’s a true metallic. Because of it’s metallic properties, it embosses in a flash, literally. If you do over emboss it, it will start to bubble – and that happens quick. I just LOVE this embossing powder.

The Wishing you….Holiday Season is stamped in Early Espresso by Stampin Up and is the only non-embossed image on here!

The finish off your card, pop up the wreath and add a few sequins. I think one of the things I love about this project is that it’s just 1/2 a sheet of card stock folded – and it’s a naturals type card stock with neutral flecks. The neutral quality adds to the card a bit – of course bright white would be great too!

Now it’s your turn to check out what the Design Team has done and join in on all the fun for this month’s Christmas Challenge. I KNOW you emboss!

Till next time –

Mixing CAS & Monoprinting

Have you ever mixed a monoprint with clean and simple design? Monoprinting is not only super easy, it’s fun, quick and I’m always amazed at the results. I highly encourage you to give it a try. And most of us LOVE clean and simple, so why not mix them together?

It’s snowing here today in the Black Forest – hard to believe it’s almost May! Seems like a good day to work with my Gelli Plate.

Clean and Simple Mixed Media

In the spirit of creative card making, today we’re going to mix it up a little – for the CAS Mix it Up Challenge. I’m addicted to this challenge, and although it’s in it’s infancy – just two months old…it has a HUGE following already with some amazing card makers.

It’s the brain child of Bonnie Klass and Loll Thompson. You probably have crossed paths with one or both over the years, as they are avid card makers, have designed for numerous teams and both have distinct styles each their own.

april

This challenge is all about mixing clean and simple stamping/design with mixed media. Now the words mixed media get one of two reactions – interest and terror. But today’s project is hoping to not only peak your interest, but dispel the myth that all mixed media is intense, takes a long time and is only for artists who love to art journal.

Both projects today were from the creation of one monoprint. To make a monoprint you need three things – a printing plate (I use a gelli plate), some acrylic paint and a tool to spread the paint – I used a brayer.

Gelli Plates are inexpensive tools that give you the ability to make your work looks masterful, unique and will definitely leave the recipient of your card wondering…how in the world did you do that?!! Here are just a few prints I made quickly one day to give you an idea of how fun this artform is:

Gelli Arts - Gelli Plate Monoprints for Mixed Media

Today we’re going to use a 6×6 inch plate by Gelli Arts. And for this challenge, we’ll incorporated a few stencils as well – after all, that is the theme of this month’s challenge! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see there’s not much else to it.

Why don’t we get started. I filmed the process for you, wrote a step by step tutorial below and added some detailed pictures. The video has three distinct parts – the monoprinting (first five minutes – yup…that’s it), card specifics and why, and lastly (final 2 1/2 minutes) – all about clean and simple design and the rules I live by – don’t miss that part!

Click Here to watch in HD on YouTube

What do you think? Of course you can always use stencils in the traditional way too – I just thought it would be fun to bring a little monoprinting into the mix.

CAS Monoprint Tutorial

  • Start out by gathering up all your supplies. Monoprinting goes fast – and there’s nothing worse than not having your paper right there and your paint drying up on you!
  • Spread out your background color with a brayer and the rubber attachment.
  • Clean off your brayer on a piece of scrap paper and immediately roll over your gelli plate to “lift” some of the paint you just laid down. You want to get the look in the video – lots of color still, but a bit subdued. TIP – Don’t “lift” more than twice – you’ll remove too much paint.

Gelli Plate Mixed Media

  • Place your Latticeworks stencil by Tim Holtz over your paint and pull the positive print. TIP – if you want it to be a bit random, only pat the back of your paper in random spots. Try to leave a little paint behind, I chose to pull most of it.
  • Lift your stencil, and place your white card stock on the pattern left behind. Burnish the back of your paper with your hand (I like to add a piece of copy paper if my paper is shorter than my plate as in the video) to transfer as much of your print as possible.
  • Lift your print and try and pull a ghost print with copy paper if you can – I was unable to.

Monoprints and monoprinting

  • Clean your gelli plate in-between if you desire, for me that always depends on how much is left behind and what my goal with the project is.
  • Add the Bloom Silhouette stencil by Artplorations to your plate and add a dark color with a brayer to the desired flowers. I chose to add Paynes Grey. You want a contrasting color to your first color. Brown or Dark Purple with Yellow, Black with Blue or Red, etc…
  • Lift your stencil and pull the print onto your second print (the negative), if you have a ghost print – pull that as well onto another piece.

Mixed Media and CAS Monoprints - Ingrid Blackburn

  • Add some marks to your Gelli Plate with more Paynes Grey and the inside of a Starbucks Cup Wrapper. The corrugated inside is great for texture.
  • Add the lines in three spots – if I could do mine again, I’d add the last one a bit higher. I remember thinking not too high, but my original spot in my mind would have been better. TIP – Lesson learned – go with instinct in art, not the mind.
  • Trim your positive and negative prints down. Measurements are below.

Clean and Simple Mixed Media CAS

  • Stamp Thanks from Mini Thanks (Create a Smile) onto a scrap piece of black card stock with Versamark (Tsukeniko) and emboss in White. Trim it down as in the photo leaving more space to the right and left and just a hair top and bottom.
  • Adhere print to black card stock, making sure it’s centered and the black comes out left/right.
  • Adhere to white card base.
  • Add greeting, popping it up with fun foam.
  • Add five sparkling clear sequins.
  • Paper Pierce three holes top and bottom as in the photo.

Dimensions:

  • White card base – 4 1/4 x 5 1/2″ Folded
  • Monoprint – 3 1/2 x 4 1/2″
  • Black Matte – 3 5/8 x 4″

In the video at the end, I go over my rules for design and clean and simple cards. It’s the last 2 1/2 minutes.

That’s it! What do you think? Don’t let mixed media scare you. It’s just combining different mediums on a project. This project used Acrylic Paint, Stencils, textured surfaces, stamping and heat embossing. We added a little sequins for bling and you’re all set – easy peasy!

Now it’s your turn to get those fingers a little inky. The challenge is coming to an end today, but there will be a new one on the 1st. There’s still time to get one last project in though!I’m also going to play along in some never ending challenges as well…I love all the companies products I used today, and can’t say enough about them. I purchased them all on my own….they are products that I use over and over again.

Playing along with – Stamplorations Anything Goes Challenge for my Bloom Silhouette Stencil, April’s Project Share over at Create a Smile , and Happy Little Stampers Stencil Monoprint challenge – how perfect is that!

MM Watercolor Butterflies Video

Yesterday I posted a very cool, fun and quirky butterfly card for the Wings Mixed Media challenge over at Happy Little Stampers. It was such a fun project to create, rather relaxing actually, I’m so glad that I filmed it for you! I won’t lie – the project took me two hours to create, so I had to majorly edit the video down for you. I even split it up so that you can find your way easier around the two distinct different components of this card – watercoloring the butterflies and creating the mixed media background that allows them to literally fly off the page.

Mixed-Media-Watercolor-Butterflies-001

Enjoy the process – grab a beverage and have fun – I’d LOVE to see your cards when you create them! And if you haven’t subscribed to my YouTube channel yet – be sure to do so so you see them as they first come out.

Part One focuses on the masked border used to create this card and the actual watercoloring process for keeping the light and darker tones in the butterflies.

Part two focuses on the Mixed Media portion of this card used to literally pop the butterflies off the page.

New Technique Spotlight Video – Faux Ribbon

Yesterday I posted a project I whipped up using the Every Little Bit stamp set.  I promised you a video on how I turn the smallest of scraps into faux ribbon and here it is!  You can also read my post on this card with all the specifics and tips too. Click here to read card post

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGRJDg5DvvE]

Creative Tips:

  • My scraps are 3/16” wide and I give myself about 5 inches to work with.  It’s much more than I need, but easier to work with.
  • I use a bone folder to break up the fibers in the card stock.  While this isn’t a necessary step, I highly recommend it!  It makes the paper much more pliable.
  • I water colored my pumpkins with our Watercolor Crayons and the Aqua Painter.  You’ll love playing with these colorful crayons that are yours, not your kids!

I know you’ll love making your own little faux ribbon to match your project – at least you’ll never need to worry if you do run out of ribbon!

I’d love for you to share your projects with me – post them on our facebook community page! Click here to visit our facebook community
